چکیده

Non-uniform grids and mesh adaptation have become an important part of numerical approximations of differential equations over the past decades. It has been experimentally noted that mesh adaptation leads not only to locally improved solution but also to numerical stability of the underlying method. In this paper we consider nonlinear conservation laws and provide a method to perform the analysis of the moving mesh adaptation method, including both the mesh reconstruction and evolution of the solution. We moreover employ this method to extract sufficient conditions -on the adaptation of the meshthat stabilize a numerical scheme in the sense of the entropy dissipation.

Entropy-Based Mesh Refinement, I: The Entropy Adjoint Approach

This work presents a mesh refinement indicator based on entropy-variables, with an application to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The entropy variables are shown to satisfy an adjoint equation, an observation that allows recent work in adjoint-based error estimation to be leveraged in constructing a relatively cheap but effective adaptation indicator. The output associated with the en...

Balanced Monitoring of Flow Phenomena in Moving Mesh Methods

Adaptive moving mesh research usually focuses either on analytical derivations for prescribed solutions or on pragmatic solvers with challenging physical applications. In the latter case, the monitor functions that steer mesh adaptation are often defined in an ad-hoc way. In this paper we generalize our previously used monitor function to a balanced sum of any number of monitor components. This...

Mesh Movement Governed by Entropy Production

The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of using (irreversible) entropy production as driving force for a moving mesh. Such a method should be able to capture or track physical phenomena such as viscous and thermal boundary layers, shock waves and regions with chemical reactions. A brief outline is given for the FEM-ALE approach, which forms the basis of the moving mesh method. Mesh v...

Moving Mesh Non-standard Finite Difference Method for Non-linear Heat Transfer in a Thin Finite Rod

In this paper, a moving mesh technique and a non-standard finite difference method are combined, and a moving mesh non-standard finite difference (MMNSFD) method is developed to solve an initial boundary value problem involving a quartic nonlinearity that arises in heat transfer with thermal radiation. In this method, the moving spatial grid is obtained by a simple geometric adaptive algorithm ...
